The Dots Hide the Installation Area

The black border also improves the windshield’s appearance.
Without it, drivers and passengers might be able to see:
- Urethane adhesive
- Primer
- Uneven edges
- Mounting hardware
- Sensors or wiring
- Minor variations around the glass opening
The opaque frit creates a clean border that hides these components from view.

This is particularly useful on modern windshields that may contain cameras, rain sensors, antennas, heating elements, and other equipment.
What Is the Third Visor?
Many cars have another patch of black dots near the top center of the windshield, behind or around the rearview mirror.
This feature is often called the third visor frit.
The driver and passenger sun visors leave a small gap around the rearview mirror. Sunlight can pass through that opening and create glare.
The third visor pattern shades part of that gap without placing a solid obstruction in the driver’s main field of view.
It does not replace regular sun visors or sunglasses, but it can make low-angle sunlight less distracting.
Are the Dots Related to Window Tint?
The frit is not the same as aftermarket window tint.
Frit is a ceramic coating permanently fired onto the glass during manufacturing. Window tint is a film or coating added to reduce visible light, heat, or UV exposure.
The raised texture of some dot-matrix areas can make aftermarket tint difficult to apply smoothly. Small air gaps may appear between the film and the dots, sometimes creating a pale or uneven border.
A professional tint installer can explain what finish is realistic for a particular windshield.
Do not cover cameras, sensors, or other advanced driver-assistance equipment without checking the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements.
Can the Frit Wear Off?
The ceramic frit is highly durable and normally does not peel away like a sticker.
What may look like damaged frit could actually be:
- A chip in the glass
- Scratching on the inner surface
- Adhesive separation
- Moisture or dirt near the edge
- Damage from a previous windshield installation
- Delamination between windshield layers
Small cosmetic marks in the black border are not always dangerous. However, damage near the windshield edge deserves attention because edge cracks can spread and the bonded area is important to the installation.
Do not scrape the frit aggressively with a metal blade or abrasive pad.
