I Tried the Viral Sugar-and-Scissors Hack… and What Happened Surprised Me

Supporters of the sugar trick claim that repeatedly cutting or pushing scissors through granulated sugar somehow sharpens the blades.

At first glance, it sounds almost magical.

But when you stop and think about it, a question immediately appears:

How could tiny sugar crystals sharpen hardened steel?

It’s a fair question.

And that’s where things become interesting.

What Actually Makes Scissors Dull?

Most people assume scissors become dull because the edge simply disappears.

That’s only part of the story.

Over time, microscopic bends, tiny imperfections, and wear along the blade reduce cutting performance.

Even a small amount of damage can make scissors feel frustratingly blunt.

The solution usually involves restoring the edge through abrasion or grinding.

Which raises another question.

Can sugar really do that?

The Experiment

I grabbed an older pair of scissors that struggled to cut paper cleanly.

Nothing terrible.

Just dull enough to be annoying.

Then I filled a bowl with granulated sugar and tried the viral method.

Stab.

Twist.

Cut.

Repeat.

Again and again.

For several minutes.

I’ll admit something happened.

The scissors seemed slightly smoother afterward.

But were they actually sharper?

That was harder to determine.
