Ingredients

  • 500g dried split green peas
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 brown onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.5 litres chicken stock
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the split peas under cold water and drain well.
  2. Add the split peas to the slow cooker.
  3. Place the smoked ham hock on top.
  4. Add the diced carrots, celery, onion, and minced garlic.
  5. Pour in the chicken stock.
  6. Stir gently to combine.
  7. Cover with the lid.
  8. Cook on LOW for 8 hours or HIGH for 5 hours.
  9. Once the peas are soft and the ham is falling off the bone, carefully remove the ham hock.
  10. Shred the meat, discarding any skin, fat, and bones.
  11. Return the shredded ham to the slow cooker.
  12. Stir well and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  13. Serve hot with crusty bread.
